Stephen Fry-esque essay
(well, attempt of, ‘cause I am not Stephen Fry; I’m glad I’m not, I’d say)

About a week ago I attended a discussion at an English class in the University. The general topic was health. At some instant the conversation came to the subject of Homosexuality and our attitude towards it. In the end of the second half of the first decade of the twenty first century my not-so-uneducated group-mates expressed such reactionary opinions on the matter that I was somewhat disturbed. They were saying that homosexuality is unnatural, disgusting, and abnormal. First, it exists in the animal world, and animals are perfectly natural, ain’t they? So you can’t say it is unnatural. Second, homosexual love and sex is not more disgusting than any human relationship or sexual intercourse. People are the ones who may be disgusting, not the kind of sexual orientation (or nationality, or any other generalization). You can find disgusting homosexuals—all those queens (yes, Freddie Mercury for instance), 40-year-old fat paedophiles, etc. But just the same way you can find lots and lots of disgusting bustards, who would be perfectly straight. And, finally, the third—abnormality. Here I would agree. Yes, it is abnormal. But what is norm? Norm is mediocrity, that’s what it is. It is at least strange to pride yourself upon your own mediocrity. It is strange to be proud of the fact that you are the slave of reproductive instinct. Homosexuals are above it, they are acting in accordance with their own feelings and desires. I’m not urging everyone to become homosexuals; I’m not even a homosexual myself, for Christ’s sake. What I am against is militant homophobia. All the more since militant homophobes are usually latent (or former) poofs, so that is even greater sin—hypocrisy. No to mention the amount of geniuses among homosexuals. No—the amount of homosexuals among geniuses—that would be more proper. With Rimbaud, Wilde, Bowie and Morrissey first coming to mind.
