Essay on Bridget Jones’s Diary

I’ve seen this movie on my English class about a month ago. And before watching it we’ve been listening to the audio version of the book. When I watched the movie for the first time—again on the English class, some years ago—I thought something like “well, quite nice and funny, a good one to watch at the English class”. But this second watching—which has been preceded by the mentioned above listening to the audio tape and the discussions in our group—was somewhat unpleasant and troublesome. This feeling deepened after watching the documentary called something like “Bridget Jones, a cultural icon”. Bridget Jones was shown there as collective image of modern woman, with such vitally important questions in her little head as: 1) what to choose: “bad-sexy” guy or “good-boring” one, and 2) what to wear: big comfortable pants, or microscopical sexy pants, or no pants. It all makes me so sad. It’s like girls are totally different world. And after visiting it, one can’t help being disappointed. Well, it all has been probably known for ages and ages, but still you always believe that it is true only for majority of them, but there are some girls—or at least one special girl—who do not conform to this rule. And these beliefs are seriously shaken after watching all this. It seems like they always think about some stupid little things, that the only thing they are ever preoccupied with is finding a decent boyfriend. All of them, even those who are intelligent.

Well, I understand that all of this was pretty much exaggerated, that it was shown with irony, that—after all—you may as well portray boys in similarly ridiculous and unpleasant way. Well, I agree that the movie is quite well-done. It is well-written (note, that I appreciate the writer Richard Curtis very much), well-cast (it is very funny that Colin Firth also played Darcy in Pride and Prejudice) and well-acted (Renée Zellweger did a great job). Besides, it is British. You know what I mean. It’s got the style, it’s got the taste. But still, in spite of that, the movie has very strong bitter taste for me.
